Telecommunications: African States called to defend interests

ALGIERS- Minister of Post and Telecommunications Karim Bibi Triki called Wednesday, in Algiers, the African States to defend "in common" their interests in the field of information technologies and communication, emphasizing the Algerian strategy for the generalization of these services.

"Current and future challenges force our continent to hold a solid and efficient regional consultation, so that the African States can defend their common interests, in terms of information and communication technologies," said the Minister at the opening of the 6th Plenipotentiary Conference of the African Telecommunication Union.

To be held until July 26th, this preparatory meeting is held in anticipation of the next conference of plenipotentiaries of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), scheduled for next September in Bucharest (Romania).

The Minister encouraged the African States to "work collectively and with determination" to impose themselves within specialized international bodies.

The minister noted the "extraordinary" development driven by new technologies that have become "indispensable."

He added that African countries "must make more efforts to strengthen digitalization in their government policies and development strategies."

When referring to the Algerian experience in the generalization of the use of information and communication technologies, Bibi Triki said that "the strategy developed by the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which plans to broaden horizons in this sense, places the citizen at the center of concerns and pays particular attention to the fact that new technologies are deployed throughout the national territory."

In this regard, he added that Algeria "gives extreme importance to the construction of basic infrastructures, intended for telecommunications and intended to benefit all citizens", while working, at the continental level, to "complete the fiber optic network linking it to other brotherly countries."

He stressed on the strengthening of regional cooperation in order to "concretize the main lines of the 2063 Agenda of the African Union (AU) aimed in particular at the inclusion of citizens and the achievement of economic complementarities between the African countries."
