Arab Summit, Algiers, November 2022

Algeria ready to host Arab Summit

CAIRO- Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra affirmed Tuesday, in Cairo, that Algeria is ready to host, in the beginning of November, the next Arab Summit, pointing out its great satisfaction with the support received from the Arab countries to make this event successful.

During the works of the 158th session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, Lamamra presented the results of the consultations conducted by Algeria as part of the preparations for the Arab Summit and its position vis-à-vis the latest developments in the Arab countries.

In this respect, Lamamra said that the sensitive international situation “requires combining efforts to protect the region from these tensions and different resulting challenges.”

For Lamamra, “there is still time to revive the Arab solidarity spirit and to steer towards the supreme goals for which the Arab League had been created, as a house uniting all the Arabs, a shield to defend the just Arab causes and a space of coordination, paving the way to a promising future for unity and cohesion.”

He said that “these noble objectives are for Algeria “the compass of action” and the focus of the efforts made under the leadership of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as part of the consultations he is conducting with his Arab brothers and leaders, in anticipation of the next Arab Summit.”

In this respect, he said he is “very satisfied” with the support of the “Arab brothers for their contribution to the success of this Arab event and to make it a renewed chapter for the deepening of the debate on all these key issues and develop a unified vision, likely to meet the requirements of the current situation and to create promising opportunities for the future generations.”

The minister pointed out the difficult circumstances the Palestinian cause is experiencing, which is exposed to serious dangers because of the Zionist occupier that is shirking its international obligations, by imposing the fait accompli and destroying any chance for peace, a framework that guarantees the protection of the Palestrina people’s legitimate rights, particularly their right to the establishment of their independent State on the basis of 1967’s borders, with al-Quds as capital.

Preserving the Palestinians’ rights is dependent on the unification of their ranks, he said, “which is the objective that Algeria seeks to achieve through the initiative launched by President Tebboune to strengthen the Palestinian national unity,” he added.

Concerning the latest developments in the Arab world, Lamamra reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to backing all the efforts aimed to consolidate the peaceful settlements of the crises in Libya, Syria and Yemen, in such a way as to “ensure the unity and sovereignty of these brotherly countries, giving concrete expression to the legitimate aspirations of their peoples and ending the domestic conflicts and foreign interferences in all their forms.”

CAIRO (Egypt)- The secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed Tuesday, in Cairo, his wish for the next Arab Summit in Algiers, early November, to be a turning point in the joint Arab action and to "establish unity and cohesion."

"We are optimistic about the Algiers Summit in November. We pray Allah that it would be a turning point in the history of the joint Arab action and would establish unity and cohesion, and be the genuine expression of the public opinion in our Arab countries who wish to see their leaders united, with a unified position," Abou Gheit said in an address at the 158th session of the Arab League Council, held at the level of Foreign Ministers.

The ultimate goal, he added, "challenges us to settle our disputes and clear all obstacles, by putting higher Arab interests above any other consideration, concerned to preserve the strong bond that unites us."

"Despite the crises and challenges they are facing, Arab countries are able to meet the challenges as a strong regional group."

31st Arab Summit in Algiers: President Tebboune extends invitation to Palestinian President

ALGIERS- The minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, was received Monday morning, upon his arrival in Cairo, by the president of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, to whom he handed an invitation from President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune to participate in the 31st Arab Summit in Algiers (November 1-2), the ministry said in a statement.

Moroccan media's rumors about Arab League council meeting unfounded
ALGIERS- Special Envoy in charge of the Western Sahara issue and Maghreb countries, Amar Belani, said on Wednesday that "the rumors" peddled by the Moroccan media about the meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States are "absolutely unfounded."

“Faithful to its mission and its practice of creating imaginary diplomatic triumphs, MAP (and its media satellites) has just invented so-called progress and points recorded against Algeria at the meeting of the Council of the Arab League which has just completed its work in Cairo, Belani said in a statement.

However, to read the official documents adopted by this session, "we quickly realize that the rantings of the official media megaphone of the Makhzen are absolutely unfounded," added Belani.

Indeed, in the resolution on the follow-up of "Iranian interference in the internal affairs of Arab States," the Polisario Front is not mentioned at all and that Algerian delegation fight against terrorist and separatist organizationq and that Algeria calls for compliance with international law and UN resolutions, while respecting the sovereignty and independence of States.

It also calls for the coordination of international efforts to combat this phenomenon, within the framework of the UN strategy and respect for the rules of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination in accordance with the list of the last 17 non-self-governing territories set by the United Nations in connection with their decolonization, said the diplomat.

On this basis, "the content of the draft resolution, which refers to the meeting of a follow-up committee, does not reflect these fundamental principles of the United Nations and the Algerian delegation wishes to emphasize that what is described as separatist terrorist groups are only those that are classified as such by the United Nations and that the borders referred to are those that are internationally recognized.

In addition, the Council of Ministers has rejected the project initiated by Morocco for the preparation of an additional report on the legal and human aspects to complement the "Comprehensive Plan to curb the recruitment of children in armed conflict and terrorism" and has entrusted the Secretariat General of the Arab League.
