Constitutional amendment grants women important gains
ORAN- Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Kaouthar Krikou underlined Monday, in Oran, the special position of Algerian women since the independence, enshrined in various national laws and strengthened by the recent constitutional amendment which has granted them important gains.
In her opening speech, in the 1st Arab Women Trade Unionist Conference, the minister pointed out that the special attention and importance granted to women “have been strengthened by the constitutional amendment of November 2020, by instituting important political advantages, notably the principle of gender equality in employment and parity in labor market.”
She also noted that the amendment “emphasizes the State’s willingness to promote parity in the labor market, encourage and promote women to decision-making positions,” stressing the special attention paid by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune to women’s promotion.
Krikou said that the Constitution “guarantees equality for all the citizens, men and women, in terms of rights and duties, and which was enshrined in nearly all the national legislations, particularly the labor legislation and the law on the exercise of the trade union right, which underlines the non-discrimination in the exercise of a job except for their eligibility and their rights, and ensures equal wages for workers.”
The minister said that the holding of this conference, to which participated 140 trade unionists representing 15 countries, “coincides with the 60th anniversary of the national independence which marked by several qualitative activities, shedding light on the role of women in the decision-making in their country, notably the international congress in the struggles of the Arab women, from the liberation war to the construction process.”
