GECF: Arkab calls to give special emphasis to natural gas in energy transition

 
 
ALGIERS- Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab called Tuesday, in Cairo, during his participation in the 24th ministerial meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) to give special emphasis to natural gas in the sustainable development and energy transition, said a ministerial statement.
 
Arkab, who participated in this meeting with representatives of his ministerial department and of Sonatrach, “stressed the importance of this meeting to make and propose the best solutions that the world needs for long-term energy security and to ensure that natural gas regains the place it deserves as a key energy for the sustainable development and energy transition,” according to the source.
 
He gave, during this meeting, an outline of the ongoing preparations of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of GECF, which will be held in Algiers in 2023.  
 
GECF’s 24th ministerial meeting saw the participation of Energy ministers and of top officials of GECF’s member States (Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela), as well as observer countries (Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Mozambique, Norway, Peru and United Arab Emirates), said the source, adding that the Energy minister of Papua New Guinea attended the meeting as a guest, as well as senior officials of guest countries (Indonesia, Mauritania and Senegal).
 
Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla chaired this meeting in his capacity as president of the ministerial meeting of GECF for 2022.
 
The meeting expressed its support to the African countries in their struggle to reduce energy poverty and bring prosperity to their populations.
 
The participants reiterated “the importance of cooperation and coordination between the member countries and of a real and strengthened dialogue between the producers, consumers and other concerned stakeholders in order to ensure the security of demand and of supply, as well as the importance of an open dialogue and transparent gas markets.”
 
The participants reaffirmed the crucial necessity of the security of supply and the security of demand, said the source.
 
On the sidelines of his participation in this ministerial meeting, Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab held a bilateral meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla, in which the two sides reviewed the state of the bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and mines and discussed opportunities of its development, said the statement.
 
They also discussed the activities of the bilateral working group in the fields of energy and mines, implemented by the two ministers in June 2022.  
 
This meeting culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding for development and cooperation in oil, gas and mines, said the source.
