Arab Summit: Palestinian cause, food security at heart of Arab Foreign Ministers’ concerns

ALGIERS- Arab Foreign Ministers were unanimous in underlining Monday, in Algiers, that the preparatory meetings for the Arab Summit that will hosted by Algeria on Tuesday and Wednesday, focused on the Palestinian cause and the economic challenges, notably Arab food security.

“Everybody hopes that the leaders in the Algiers Summit could unify the ranks in order to take up the challenges facing the Arab world, notably the Palestinian cause which is at the heart of the Arab issues,” Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sadek said in a statement to the press, calling to “combine efforts for the victory of the Palestinian people and establishment of an independent Palestinian State.”

Underscoring the several economic challenges the Arab world is facing, notably food security and water security, the Sudanese Foreign minister said he wishes that the Summit would result in decisions that enshrine the unity and prosperity of the region’s peoples.

Yemen’s Foreign Minister and Expatriates Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak said “we have big aspirations in this Summit amidst a difficult international situation and major challenges that the Nation is facing and they are on the agenda of the Summit, which will be debated by the leaders, notably the central character of the Palestinian cause.”

He pointed out that the conflicts in the region were discussed, notably the Yemenite issue which was discussed during the preparatory meeting of Foreign ministers.

Jordan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Al-Safadi affirmed that the debate was “frank, clear and direct” on all the issues facing the Arab world.

“The meetings were fruitful, just as the recommendation thanks to which we reached agreements that will be submitted to the Summit so that the heads of State would take the decisions that they dubbed relevant,” he said.

He said that after the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian crisis, the economic challenges continue to increase and everyone must attempt to establish efficient Arab mechanisms to limit the repercussions of these two crises and provide the conditions enabling the Arab economies to overcome them, in terms of food security, supply chains and energy security.”

For her part, Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al Mangouch underlined that during the preparatory meeting of the Summit, several sensitive Arab issues were discussed, pointing out that “consensus solutions on a number of issues under dispute were reached.”

Welcoming “the positive atmosphere” that marked the debates, Al Mangoudh affirmed that the final declaration “will be a consensus in view of the cooperative spirit which prevailed.

For Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdellah Abou Habib, Algiers Summit “takes place in a time when we need it most.”

The Summit succeeded in its content related to the unification of the Arab ranks, he added.
