Algeria strongly committed to enhancing, protecting human rights

ALGIERS- Minister of Justice Abderrachid Tabi stressed in Geneva, Switzerland, the strong commitment of Algeria to strengthening and protecting human rights in Algeria and worldwide, including to the benefit of colonized people.
Presenting Algeria's fourth report with respect to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), at a Human Rights Council's Intergovernmental Working Group meeting, held Friday in Geneva, Tabi, leading a multisectoral delegation, said the report "faithfully reflects the achievements since the third report presented in May 2017."
He reiterated Algeria's strong commitment to "working for the strengthening and protection of human rights everywhere in the world, including to the benefit of the colonized people and those living under foreign domination, out of solidarity with the victims and the voiceless."
The minister mentioned the different events that occurred in Algeria since the third report, including the citizen popular movement of 22 February 2019, called "Hirak," and which was "an extraordinary test considering the peaceful nature of its demonstrations, its strong mobilization and its inspiration as it led to transcending partisan wrangling and personal interests."
The Hirak was "the starting point for a collective awareness, which allowed Algerian citizens to reclaim the public space and the political landscape."
The minister said that momentum was a new milestone in the long list of the achievements of the valiant Algerian people.
He added that it was an opportunity for the Algerians to reiterate their commitment to the values enshrined in the Declaration of November 1954 and to the foundations of the Algerian state."
The minister of Justice tackled the broad consultations carried out to "introduce a gradual change" and "preserve the continuity of the State, its territorial unity, its independence and its stability."
