Western Sahara: Large demonstration in Madrid for referendum on self-determinationMADRID (Spain)- Spanish coordination of organizations supporting Western Sahara (CEAS-Sahara) called during a large demonstration in Madrid, on Wednesday, for a referendum on self-determination in the Sahrawi territories occupied by Morocco.
Held under the slogan: "They Will Not Silence Us, Free Sahara Now, the Only Solution is Self-determination," the demonstration march started from La Calle Atocha and ended in Plaza de Santa Ana, in Madrid.
The demonstrators who criss-crossed the streets of the Spanish capital carried banners reading "Free Sahara" and "Human rights now."
In a speech at the end of the march, the president of the CEAS-Sahara, Xavier Serra, said the demonstration's goal was to "demand the holding, without delay, of a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara, denounce the exploitation the Western Sahara's natural resources through illegal agreements between the European Union and Morocco, request the direct involvement of the Spanish government for a fair and final solution to the conflict."
Serra stressed that the CEAS-Sahara rejected Madrid's support of Morocco's sinister plan of Western Sahara autonomy.
"In addition to being unfair," such a support, he added, "deliberately ignores the duty and responsibility of Spain as the administrative power."
