9th High-Level Conference on Peace, Security in Africa kicks off

 
ORAN-The 9th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa kicked off on Wednesday in Oran, under the theme “Support to the new African members of the United Nations Security Council in dealing with peace and security issues in the African continent.”
 
The conference kicked off under the chairmanship of Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa for this month, Geoffrey Onyeama, and in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra (host country).
 
The conference is being attended at a high level, including at the ministerial level, by member states of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU), as well as by African members of the UN Security Council, in addition to experts and high-level representatives from African and UN bodies.
 
It aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the African Peace and Security Council and the African members of the UN Security Council in the performance of their tasks, including the defense of Africa's common positions and interests in UN Security Council decision-making on peace and security issues relating to the continent.
 
Adeoye stresses need for strong African union with unified foreign policy
ORAN (Algeria)- The commissioner of Political Affairs, peace and Security at the Africa Union (AU), Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, on Wednesday in Oran (432 km west of Algiers), stressed the need to build a strong African Union with a unified foreign policy, while working on overcoming all problems and challenges facing the continent to make its voice heard in international fora. Speaking at the opening of the 9th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa entitled "support to new African members in the UN Security Council in dealing with issues of peace and security in the African continent," Ambassador Bankole Adeoye said that "making Africa's voice heard in international fora requires a strong African Union, able to resolve the problems and meet the challenges related to development."
He added that it was necessary to reflect and work together on the challenges of peace, security and development facing Africa and to exchange experiences and share knowledge to identify the most effective ways and means to meet the existing challenges."
The conference, according to him, is an opportunity for current and future members to have a common assessment of their continental tenure and responsibilities within the UN Security Council.
He added that the event was a platform for exchange with different international officials on the current challenges of peace and security faced by the African continent.
 
Algeria will continue to be a driving force for peace, stability in Africa
ORAN (Algeria)- The ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, said Wednesday that Algeria would continue its role as a driving force for peace and stability in Africa, by providing its full support to the implementation of African solutions to the continent's problems.
In an opening address at the ninth High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, the minister said that "under the leadership of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and true to its constant an unwavering commitment for African causes, Algeria will spare no effort to defend and promote the principles of our Organisation during its tenure" as non-permanent member of the UN security Council.
"In response to the major upheavals, we have to defend the values" of "unity and solidarity to strengthen our collective self-reliance while looking for partners respectful of the sovereign rights of Africa in all fields of international life."
"We seek today to take new steps towards the achievement of the African vision of the founding fathers of our Organisation, a vision based on the agenda 2063, which aims to reach an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, managed by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force at the world stage."
 
High-Level Conference on Peace in Africa, unique opportunity to defend African positions
 
ORAN- The 9th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa constitutes a “unique opportunity” for the African countries to strengthen efforts and coordination in order to defend the common African positions within the United Nations Security Council, Chairman of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the month of December and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said Wednesday in Oran.
 
Onyeama, who chaired the opening ceremony of this high-level Conference, stressed in his speech that this meeting “constitutes a unique opportunity for all the African countries, Peace and Security Council and notably for the A3 Group, to exchange and strengthen their efforts and their coordination in order to defend the common African positions on the issues of peace and security interesting Africa, within the United Nations Security Council.”
 
The Nigerian minister expressed his gratitude to A3 Group (Ghana, Gabon and Kenya) which are still defending the common positions, interests and concerns of the African countries on peace and security issues, notably as part of the decision-making processes of the UN Security Council.
 
He also expressed, on behalf of the Peace and Security Council, “a collective commitment to supporting the new member of A3, Mozambique, which will replace Kenya as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as from the next term of office.”
 
He extended his thanks to the Kenyan government for the efforts it made during its term of office at the UN Security Council while noting that this 9th Conference will benefit from Kenya’s experience.
 
Onyeama said that Oran’s Conference is being held at the right time, given the challenges that the continent is facing, notably “the increasing proliferation of “illicit small arms and light weapons, terrorism and extremism, as well as  the recent orientations of unconstitutional changes of government in some Africa, countries.”
 
Algeria plays pivotal role in resolving African conflicts
 
 
ORAN- Director of the African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT) Driss Allali affirmed Wednesday, in Oran, that Algeria has played a pivotal role in resolving conflicts and seeking solutions to the different political and security crises in Africa.
 
In a statement to the press, on the sidelines of the 9th High-Level Conference on Peace and Security in Africa, held in Oran,  Allali said that Algeria has an efficient and pivotal role in the resolution and end of disagreements and conflicts in Africa.
 
In this regard, he said that “Algeria has managed to settle several disagreements and conflicts in Africa thanks to its skills and wisdom in the management of conflicts related to the fight against terrorism, maritime security and the fight against illegal drugs and others.”
 
The same official said that this conference is an opportunity to assess the security situation in Africa and to study the solutions that have been presented, notably those relating to the fight against terrorism, maritime security and the fight against illegal drugs.
 
He also stressed the importance of this Conference at all levels, particularly the acknowledgement of Algeria’s capacities in conflict management.
 
He noted that “Algeria will spare no effort in supporting the African causes.”
 
 
Lamamra stresses Algeria's commitment to defending Africa's priorities, interests
 
ORAN (Algeria)- The minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, on Thursday evening, in Oran, reiterated Algeria's commitment to promoting the agenda of peace, stability, development and integration at the continental level as well as defending Africa's priorities and interests.
In a closing address at the 9th High-Level Conference on Peace and security in Africa, Lamamra said Algeria, whose candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council had previously endorsed by African Union, and "with its well-known and clear track record in terms of delivering on its pan-African commitments for the promotion of the continental agenda for peace, stability, development and integration, it will embrace this responsibility with a deep sense of dedication to defend Africa’s priorities, concerns and interests.
He commended the participants at the conference for their commitment to African security, to "Oran Process" and to the strategic goal of "One Africa, One Voice."
Lamamra conveyed "President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's congratulations on the success of this edition of the Oran Process."
"On his behalf, I wish to acknowledge the active participation and dynamic engagement of my fellow Ministers and high officials in this year’s important debates featuring the major challenges to peace and security in Africa as well as the promising prospects for better coordination to achieve a strong African voice within the UN Security Council."
The Foreign Minister said "I believe that we have collectively demonstrated again that this ideal vision is not a mere slogan but rather a work in progress that we are all committed to take forward in the best interest of our countries and our peoples."
The Foreign minister called on everybody to "remain committed to this genuine process and to work hand in hand to consolidate the dynamic thus far created by the African bloc (A3) at the Security Council."
