European Parliament: MPs urge change of approach to Morocco
BRUSSELS-Members of the European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday called on European Union (EU) member states to add a series of amendments to the annual report on the common foreign policy, including a text on Morocco.In amendment number 81 on foreign policy, published by Dutch MEP Thijs Reuten, the Parliament calls on Morocco to release the political prisoners of the Hirak and human rights defenders.
The amendment urges Morocco to "stop its harassment and intimidation of journalists, human rights defenders and activists in the diaspora, to release political prisoners, while focusing particularly on historically marginalized regions, such as the Rif.”
In this regard, the Dutch MEP, Thijs Reuten called this amendment "historic" as "it is the first time the European Parliament addresses Morocco in its annual report on foreign policy.
