Mali's reconciliation agreement: UN commends Algeria's mediation efforts
NEW YORK (United Nations)- UN Secretary General's special representative for Mali, El-Ghassim Wane, has commended the international mediation efforts of Algeria for the promotion of dialogue among the signatories of the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, resulting from Algiers process.Speaking before the UN Security Council, on Friday, about the implementation of the peace process, Wane noted that the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and the other members of the international mediation team, led by Algeria, "have spared no effort to promote dialogue among the signatory parties (of the agreement) to break the deadlock."
"I encourage the parties to spare no effort to overcome the current difficulties and make decisive progress in the implementation of the peace agreement," he added.
The UN envoy for Mali stressed that the country's stabilisation was crucial to the whole region while the United Nations mission (the MINUSMA), he runs, has been deployed in Mali for nearly 10 years now.
"During this period, the UN mission has achieved a lot. However, the goals set by the Security Council are not fully achieved yet, and significant changes have occurred."
