Algeria, US cooperation records “great advances”

ALGIERS- Elizabeth Moore Aubin, who has been ambassador of the United States of America to Algiers for a year, aspires to strengthen an already very strong bilateral relations, notably in the economic field, affirming that “great advances” have already been recorded and others could follow, notably with the promulgation of the new law on investment, dubbed very attractive for the American companies.

“Since I arrived, February 2, 2022, there have been a lot of initiatives between our two countries. I assess the bilateral relationship to be very strong and growing. We are expanding and deepening our ties in a whole range of areas, specifically, we have made great advances with our economic relationships. There have been huge successes this year, both in traditional oil and gas, but also through the entire economic range of issues,” she said in an interview with APS.

In this regard, Moore Aubin underlines that the new law on the investment, promulgated last July, constitutes a “very good step, ensuring that this new code “responds to investors’ needs for a strong regulatory framework with the ability to move funds in another country.”

“I think that is very attractive for American companies,” she said, underscoring that she will continue, during her term of office, to attract more American investments to Algeria.

The US ambassador said that an agreement on the opening of a direct flight from Algiers to New York could be concluded this year between the two countries.

Concerning the progress made in this regard, “We are in negotiations. Technical negotiations have been gove and I am hoping that we will reach an agreement very soon, this year even,” she underlined.

This direct flight, she added, “will completely change the US-Algeria relationship.”

“From the economic perspective, if we have a regularly scheduled flight, this will allow goods to come between our two countries much more quickly. It means Algerians and Americans do not have to transit through a third country. We can come and go between our two countries directly, strengthening and deepening our people to people ties and additionally I will say that. You know as Algeria seeks a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations, having a direct flight is the direct path, the line to the UN,” she underlined.

When dealing with the cooperation in terms of security and fight against terrorism, the US ambassador to Algiers affirmed that the two countries work in close collaboration to contribute to the establishment of peace everywhere.

“So Algeria is clearly a regional power. They have been enormously proactive and pragmatic in their relationships in the neighborhood to try promoting stability. I would say that the United States and Algeria work closely together in international fora as well as bilaterally to help create peace everywhere,” she said.
Concerning the contribution of her country to the effort of the Algerian authorities to encourage and promote the teaching of English language, Moore Aubin underlined the existence of a cooperation with the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to “revamp English language learning at Algeria’s 109 universities.”

“This is incredibly important area of bilateral cooperation. So it is a very exciting time whether to partner with Algeria in this effort of English language learning,” she said.

“So in the last year, our English language programs, whether online or in person, have impacted 28,000 Algerians,” she added.
