65th anniversary of Sakiet Sidi Youssef events: National memory, cornerstone of new Algeria

ALGIERS- Minister of Mujahedeen and Rights Holders Laid Rebiga affirmed on Tuesday, in Algiers, that the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune had been working on making the national memory “a cornerstone” for the building of the new Algeria, in order to strengthen the fraternity, friendship and cooperation ties with the brotherly country Tunisia.

In an address read on his behalf by his principal private secretary Hamid Boucharef, at the opening of the Conference on Sakiet Sidi Youssef Massacre, organized at the National Centre of Studies and Research on Popular Resistance, National Movement and the Revolution of 1 November 1954, Rebiga said that “the President of the Republic has made the national memory one of the pillars of this nation and a cornerstone for the building of the new Algeria” in order “to strengthen the Fraternity, friendship and cooperation ties with the brotherly country Tunisia.”

A cooperation, he said, which is reflected in the mutual visits of the two countries’ presidents as part of “the joint efforts aimed to benefit from the rapprochement elements in order to take up the challenges facing our regional environment.”

He underlined that the participation of the Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed, alongside his brother President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the inauguration ceremony of the commemorative stele “Monument of the Freedom” on the occasion of the celebration by Algeria of the 60th anniversary of the Day of Independence, is an “irrefutable evidence of the privileged character of the relations between the two countries, strengthened by the values of the common struggle.”

“If the duty requires from us to preserve our national memory, it also calls us to preserve the history of our common struggle, in order to strengthen the ties of fraternity and integration, and to raise the cooperation relations in the economic field and in terms of bilateral partnership up to the level of the political relations between our two countries,” he underlined.

He recalled the events of Sakiet Sidi Youssef where “the blood of the brothers mingled in the appalling massacre committed by the French colonialism on this day of 1958, against Algerian and Tunisian civilians, after bombarding a weekly market and a school, in a blatant attack on the values of humanity and international charters.”
