President Tebboune reiterates Algeria’s commitment to Africa’s right to permanent membership of UN Security Council

There is optimism in Libya despite crisis, says President Tebboune
 
ADDIS ABABA- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed Friday that despite the crisis situation prevailing in Libya, there is still optimism concerning the settlement of the situation, due to the “good will” shown by the Libyan parties to make this country’s interest prevail.
 
In his speech in the African Union (AU) high level meeting on Libya, on the eve of the holding of the 36th AU Heads of State and Government Summit, read on his behalf by Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane, President of the Republic said that “the dangerous phase of political and security instability, the deadlock in negotiations and the institutional split put to the test all the gains achieved in the crisis settlement process in this neighboring country, in view of the serious repercussions on the security and stability of neighboring countries and the Sahel region.”
 
“Despite the worries on the crisis situation, there is optimism due to the goodwill shown by the Libyan parties to overcome the ordeals and make the country’s supreme interest prevail,” said President Tebboune, expressing the hope that “the African and international joint efforts leave an impact on the ground, through the revival of the peaceful settlement process between the Libyan belligerents.”
 
 
The President of the Republic welcomed the intensive and tireless efforts made in favor of reconciliation in Libya, hailing “the new dynamic launched recently to activate the inter-Libyan dialogue process and launch the dialogue between the Libyan brothers and bring the views closer, establish mutual trust and to expand consensus.”
 
 
Among these positive steps, he cited “the return of the 5+5 joint military committee to meetings after a long interruption, to follow up the implementation of the agreed decisions concerning the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign combatants, the ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners,” he added.

ADDIS ABABA- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Saturday, in Addis Ababa, Algeria’s commitment to Africa’s legitimate right to become permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, stressing his commitment to working relentlessly to make the voice of the continent and its legitimate claims heard.
 
In a speech during the works of the ministerial meeting of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) on the reform of the UN Security Council held on the occasion of the 36^th AU Heads of State and Government Summit, read on his behalf by Prime Minister Aimene Benabderrahmane, President of the Republic welcomed “the spirit of cooperation continues and the fruitful coordination established between the representatives of the brotherly African countries in the international and regional forums to make the voice of the unified African position heard.”
 
This move, underlined the President of the Republic, aims to insist on the necessity of enabling the African continent to obtain two permanent seats within the UN body and to increase its quota of representatives at the level of non-permanent seats from three to five seats, in accordance with the content of "Consensus of Ezulwini" and of “the Sirte Declaration.”
 
For Algeria, the issue of reforming the Security Council is a necessity to reach a fairer and more representative and balanced global order, notably in these delicate circumstances marked by a succession of crises and their effects, bearing the beginnings of new changes in the balance of forces on the international scene.”
 
 
“Our continent is facing many-sided and multi-dimensional threats which affect peace and security such as the phenomenon of terrorism, wars, climate changes, food, energy and health crises, accentuated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,” added the President of the Republic.
 
 
In this regard, President Tebboune reaffirmed to his counterparts of the Committee Algeria’s commitment to Africa’s legitimate right to become permanent member of the United Nations Security Council as stipulated in the Sirte Declaration and Ezulwini Consensus.
