BRICS: Most member countries in favour of Algeria's membership
ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday said Algeria's application for BRICS membership was expected to be decided at the group's meeting next summer, noting that most member countries were in favour of Algeria's accession.
In reply to a question by Qatari news TV channel Al Jazeera, about Algeria's membership of the BRICS, given its significant position as the major Arab and African country, Africa's leading gas exporter, Africa's fourth-largest economy and free from any debt, President Tebboune said those factors "empower Algeria to join the BRICS."
He pointed out however that "much work is still to be done this year to increase the gross domestic product (GDP) and the contribution rate of the industrial sector in the GDP, in addition to many economic indicators that we should reform to join the BRICS with the head held high."
On Algeria's application for BRICS membership, the head of State said member countries such as China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil "have responded positively."
"It means that the door is wide open," President Tebboune said.
"I think that the decision about (Algeria's) membership will be taken during the coming meeting of the group next summer."
